Former University of Latvia Biology Institute building in Salaspils sold for 1.13 million euros
The former Biology Institute building in Salaspils, Latvia, was sold for 1.134 million euros after being vacated in 2020.
The property located on Miera Street in Salaspils, with a total area of 59,876 m2, was sold after being acquired by a legal entity for 1.134 million euros, significantly more than its initial asking price of 760,000 euros. The site was previously home to the University of Latvia's Biology Institute, which was a leading center for biological and ecological research in Latvia since its establishment in 1951. However, the institute vacated its historic building in Salaspils in late 2020, moving to new premises in Riga.
In November 2022, the government decided to transfer the ownership of the Salaspils property to the Ministry of Finance, which then assigned it to the State Real Estate Management Agency for oversight.按照 VNĪ 的说法,基于公司的战略,VNĪ 长期保持对国家治理所需的资产的管理,而对于不再为公共机构所需的不动产,则通过销售来处置。 The sale indicates a shift in the management of state properties and reflects the government's strategy to streamline holdings that are no longer necessary for public use.
The varying condition of the buildings on the property, which are currently not in use, raises questions about the future plans for the site and what developments may take place to revitalize the area. As the property borders the Latvian National Botanical Garden, opportunities for redevelopment could align with environmental and scientific initiatives, which may attract further investment to Salaspils and the surrounding region.
