The former Biology Institute building of the University of Latvia located in Salaspils was sold at an auction for 1.134 million euros, with a starting bid of 760,000 euros.
The former Biology Institute building of the University of Latvia, situated on Miera Street in Salaspils, has been sold for 1.134 million euros in an electronic auction organized by VAS "Valsts nekustamie īpašumi." The auction began with a starting price of 760,000 euros and included a bidding increment of 1,000 euros. After 374 bids, a legal entity purchased the property, which comprises a land area of 59,876 square meters and includes 12 buildings, one of which is a five-story laboratory with a total area of 5,662 square meters.
According to a property valuation conducted by SIA "Vindeks" in October 2025, most of the buildings on the site are considered to be in unsatisfactory or hazardous condition, while the laboratory building is rated as being in satisfactory condition. The auction winner is required to complete the payment within two weeks, marking a significant sale that may have implications for the future use of the property, which has historical significance to the university.
In November 2022, the government decided to transfer the former property used by the Biology Institute to the Ministry of Finance. This decision reflects a broader strategy regarding the management of state-owned properties and may influence future scientific and educational endeavors in the region, as the property is now removed from direct academic use and put under government management for potential redevelopment or repurposing.
