Cedae, the state water company in Brazil, has announced the commencement of compensation payments to residents who suffered damage due to a significant rupture of a large water supply pipe at the Guandu Water Treatment Station in Nova Iguaçu. This event, which occurred on Thursday, December 5, caused extensive damage to homes, commercial establishments, and vehicles while also affecting water supply across several municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro.
Following the incident, Cedae engaged an insurance company to inspect the damaged vehicles and facilitate the compensation process. Starting from Monday, December 9, affected property owners will begin receiving payments, signaling Cedae's commitment to addressing the fallout from the rupture. For residences and other personal belongings, the company carried out a detailed assessment of the damages and collected relevant information regarding the affected residents.
The compensation process includes the preparation of a budget to determine the indemnity amounts, and it is being monitored by the Public Defender’s Office to ensure transparency and fairness. Once the residents validate the identified damages and the budget presented by Cedae, payments will be disbursed within 48 hours, thus providing timely redress to those impacted by this significant infrastructure failure.
