Cedae completes repairs at ETA Guandu and begins resumption of water supply in Greater Rio

Cedae has completed repairs at the ETA Guandu water treatment station and has started the gradual resumption of water supply in the Greater Rio area.

Cedae (Companhia Estadual de Águas e Esgotos) has successfully concluded repairs on a pipeline at the ETA Guandu water treatment station in Nova Iguaçu, with operations fully restored by 7:25 AM on Sunday, October 8. During the repair period, the treatment station functioned at approximately 55% capacity. With the completion of the maintenance work, Cedae has initiated a gradual return to regular water production, which is expected to normalize water supplies in the areas served within the coming hours.

The impact of the maintenance had been significant, affecting water distribution to around 10 million residents across Greater Rio, particularly in the Baixada Fluminense region. Since Thursday, October 5, a series of operational failures at the Guandu station had led to substantial water supply reductions. By Saturday, October 7, several municipalities, especially in the Baixada Fluminense and areas like Santa Teresa in the capital, experienced complete water shortages, causing disruptions in daily life and leading to public concern over the state of water availability.

Cedae has informed local water distribution companies about the restoration of water production, transferring the responsibility to these entities for communicating specific timelines and conditions regarding the resumption of water supply in each municipality and neighborhood. This situation underscores the critical importance of infrastructure maintenance and the downstream effects that failures in such systems can have on large populations, highlighting challenges in water management in urban environments like Greater Rio.
