The colorful graduation performance is being staged at Jēkabpils State Gymnasium

Students at Jēkabpils State Gymnasium are preparing a vibrant graduation performance of the musical 'Tobāgo', reflecting on historical hopes and realities.

Every year, the twelfth-grade students of Jēkabpils State Gymnasium collaborate with teachers to stage a graduation performance, and this year, the graduates have chosen to bring to life the musical 'Tobāgo' by Māra Zālīte and Uldis Marhilēvičs on stage. The narrative revolves around Duke Jacob's colonization of Tobago, depicting the aspirations of Latvians seeking fulfillment in an exotic land and the disillusionment with the harsh reality they eventually face.

The director of the performance, Oskars Bērziņš, emphasized the relevance of the play's message in today's context, stating that the seemingly fortunate land of Tobago ultimately reveals itself to be quite the opposite, highlighting the need for discussions about patriotism and supporting one's country. He believes it is essential for the audience to reflect on these themes, especially in the current societal climate of Latvia.

This graduation performance tradition has been a cornerstone of Jēkabpils State Gymnasium since 1972, boasting over fifty years of history with each production leaving a unique and memorable imprint. Notably, there were two performances where young people created their own scripts, showcasing their creativity and engagement in the arts, an integral part of their educational journey.
