Biologically Grown Trout is Served for Lunch at Līgatne New Leaders High School
Līgatne New Leaders High School introduces biologically grown trout in its lunch menu as part of a broader initiative to promote organic food in schools within the Gauja National Park bio-region.
In a bid to promote organic food production in Latvia, the Cēsis municipality has signed a memorandum to establish the country's first bio-region in the Gauja National Park area. Inese Suija-Markova, the deputy chairwoman of the Cēsis municipality council, emphasized that a key focus of this initiative is to incorporate organic products into school menus. This partnership aims to create demand for organic food, especially as the municipality is a significant buyer for school meal programs.
The Līgatne New Leaders High School recently started serving lunch featuring biologically grown trout, among other organic offerings. Students from the younger classes enjoy a variety of fresh options, including soup served buffet-style, sour cream, dessert, and fresh carrots, allowing them to take as much as they like. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to enhancing the nutritional quality of school lunches and encourages healthy eating habits among students.
Saiva Vītola, the school’s principal, noted that the decision to integrate organic products into the students' meals was influenced by recent funding changes for school lunches. These improvements not only enhance the meals but also align with educational goals of promoting health and sustainability among future leaders. Such initiatives could further inspire other schools to adopt similar practices in promoting organic food consumption.
