The caterer for Jauno Līderu Secondary School in Līgatne has been recognized with organic certified kitchen status. This achievement indicates a commitment to providing high-quality meals made from locally sourced ingredients. Daily operations involve preparing up to 500 portions not only for the secondary school but also for two other educational institutions in Līgatne. Students have expressed their appreciation for the difference in meal quality, attributing it to the use of fresh, local products free from harmful chemicals.
Students have reported noticeable improvements in their daily lunches, highlighting the presence of a variety of vegetables in each meal. Laura Robežniece, a 9th-grade student, emphasized the positive impact of using products sourced solely from local Latvian suppliers. Her classmates echoed her sentiments, noting how the taste and preparation of meals like meatballs and cutlets have improved due to the organic ingredients. The emphasis on quality reflects a broader trend towards healthier eating habits within schools.
Despite the certification, the process of sourcing organic products poses challenges. The school director, Saiva Vītola, pointed out the difficulties in obtaining organic pork and some dairy products within Latvia.
