World Water Day: Pilgrimage in the Negro and Solimões rivers mobilizes society for preservation in Manaus
The third edition of the Water Pilgrimage in Manaus raised awareness about the preservation of water resources in the Amazon, coinciding with World Water Day.
On World Water Day, the third edition of the Water Pilgrimage took place in Manaus, focusing on raising awareness for the preservation of Amazonian water resources. The event, organized by the Forum of Waters of Amazonas, brought together civil society organizations and local residents in a politically and culturally rich gathering. Participants traveled by boat to the Meeting of Waters, where the Negro and Solimões rivers converge, highlighting the region's natural beauty and significance.
The pilgrimage began early on Sunday at the Ceasa Port in the southern zone of Manaus, aiming to emphasize the urgent need for public policies that ensure water access for urban populations, riverine communities, and indigenous peoples. With the central theme 'Water, source of life and common good: our rivers are not for sale!', the event included moments of spirituality, symbolic presentations, and speeches from social movement representatives, emphasizing the vital role water plays in sustaining life and community.
The mobilization reflects local concerns over environmental degradation and the importance of collective action to safeguard water resources against commercialization and exploitation. This initiative not only commemorates World Water Day but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for environmental justice and sustainable practices in the Amazon, a vital region for global ecological balance.
