World Water Day: Report points out that lack of environmental policies hinders river recovery in Piauí
A report by the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation highlights the stagnation of river water quality in Piauí, Brazil, due to insufficient environmental policies.
The SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation released the report "Observing the Rivers 2026" in March 2026, analyzing the health of Brazil's hydrographic basins. The report reveals that Piauí maintains its river water quality at a 'regular' level, mirroring the previous year's results, which the Foundation interprets as stagnation rather than improvement. This stagnation is attributed to a lack of robust actions to restore the state's water resources, especially concerning the Parnaíba River Basin, a critical area in the Northeast.
The study emphasizes that Piauí, which comprises 75% of the total area of the Parnaíba River Basin, requires more effective environmental policies to facilitate the recovery of its rivers. The lack of action is evident as the situation persists without significant changes, causing concern over the health of the waterways, which are vital for both ecology and human consumption. The report's findings are troubling, as they suggest systemic issues within environmental governance in the state.
Attempts by G1 to solicit comments from the Secretaria de Estado do Meio Ambiente e Recursos Hídricos do Piauí regarding the noted absence of environmental policies were unsuccessful prior to the article's publication. Similarly, companies responsible for water supply in Piauí, such as Águas do Piauí and Águas de Teresina, were approached for insights into water quality and potential impacts on public consumption but did not respond, indicating a lack of transparency about the situation affecting residents.
