Rio Preto achieves 2nd place in national basic sanitation ranking

São José do Rio Preto has been recognized as the second best city in Brazil for basic sanitation, according to the ranking released by Instituto Trata Brasil.

São José do Rio Preto in São Paulo has been ranked as the second best city for basic sanitation in Brazil, according to a report released by Instituto Trata Brasil. This ranking evaluates the 100 largest municipalities in the country and highlights the city's strong performance amidst a national scenario where 90 million people still lack access to treated sewage. The 18th edition of the ranking, which features data from 2024, assessed criteria such as water supply, sewage treatment, and distribution losses, revealing significant achievements in Rio Preto's sanitation quality.

The ranking indicates that for the first time, the top four cities achieved maximum scores, with Franca, also in São Paulo, taking the first place. Meanwhile, the successful sanitation performance of Rio Preto starkly contrasts with broader national challenges, where about 30 million Brazilians lack access to clean drinking water, and 90 million live without sewage collection and treatment systems. This persistent lack affects approximately 43% of the Brazilian population and has serious implications for public health, education, and the economic development of the country.

These findings underscore the importance of continuing efforts to improve sanitation infrastructure and access across Brazil. While some municipalities like Rio Preto showcase exemplary progress, the stark reality of millions lacking basic services emphasizes the need for targeted policies and investments that address the sanitation crisis, ultimately aiming to enhance the quality of life and health outcomes for countless citizens.
