Franca returns to lead the national sanitation ranking; Ribeirão Preto falls on the list
Franca, SP, has reclaimed the top spot in the national sanitation ranking, while Ribeirão Preto has dropped to 30th place, according to a report by the Trata Brasil Institute.
Franca, a municipality in São Paulo, has once again secured the top position in Brazil's national sanitation ranking, as recently published by the Instituto Trata Brasil. The ranking evaluates the 100 most populous municipalities across the country based on the 2024 indicators from the National System of Basic Sanitation Information (Sinisa) issued by the Ministry of Cities. This analysis examines three key dimensions of sanitation: service level, service improvement, and efficiency level.
According to the latest data, Franca has moved up from fifth to first place in the sanitation rankings compared to the previous 2025 list. The city previously held the top position on several occasions, demonstrating its commitment to improving sanitation services. Key metrics from the latest analysis indicate that Franca boasts an impressive water service coverage of 99.46%, sewage service coverage of 98.91%, and a sewage treatment rate of 95.98%, with a distribution loss of 24.01%.
This change in rankings reflects not only Franca's improvements in sanitation infrastructure but also highlights the challenges faced by other municipalities like Ribeirão Preto, which has fallen from its previous higher standing. With Ribeirão Preto now ranked 30th, it emphasizes the disparity in sanitation services within Brazil, raising concerns over resource allocation and management strategies in ensuring citizens have access to essential sanitation services.
