Rio de Janeiro college student develops card game to discuss racism
A college student from Rio de Janeiro has created a card game aimed at combatting racism and promoting cultural access.
Thais Dias Xavier, a 28-year-old student at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, has developed a card game that seeks to address racism and encourage cultural engagement. The project, highlighted on G1's Globo Comunidade, stemmed from her personal experiences and the recognition that many individuals feel alienated from cultural spaces, often due to geographical or knowledge barriers. Through her work, she aims to make cultural venues more accessible and inclusive.
The game was developed as part of her research titled 'Experience is also science: gamification as a tool for African cultural literacy'. This research was conducted during her participation in the 'Young Carioca Scientists' program at the Knowledge Hub in Madureira, where she initially explored the concept of using gamification to enhance cultural literacy among the youth. The project was further advanced with funding from the 'Bora Fazer' initiative, emphasizing the importance of practical implementation in educational projects.
Xavier's initiative not only highlights the importance of addressing social issues such as racism but also demonstrates how innovative approaches like gamification can play a vital role in education and community engagement. By blending entertainment with critical discourse around race and culture, she hopes to inspire more young people to actively participate in cultural activities and discussions, thereby fostering a more inclusive society.
