Event brings together religious leaders and academic community in debate on anti-racist education in Petrópolis

A free event titled 'Café com Axé' aims to promote discussions on anti-racist education and religious diversity in Petrópolis, Brazil.

The 'Café com Axé – Mobilização de Terreiros por Educação e Cultura Antirracistas' is taking place on Wednesday, November 11, in the Noble Hall of Cefet/RJ in Petrópolis, located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro. This event brings together religious leaders, students, and researchers to delve into themes of anti-racist education and religious diversity. It is organized by the collective Povo do Santo in conjunction with the Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies Center (Neabi) at Cefet/RJ’s local campus.

The format of the event is designed as a conversation circle, aiming to foster an environment for exchanging ideas and listening regarding educational practices that confront racism while promoting the appreciation of Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Indigenous cultures. Attendees will include representatives from African-influenced religions and indigenous communities, as well as members of the academic environment, creating a platform for collaborative dialogue and mutual learning.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition in Brazil of the importance of addressing racism and celebrating cultural diversities, particularly in educational settings. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the event not only seeks to address the challenges posed by racism in education but also aims to strengthen ties between traditional knowledge of religious communities and academic perspectives, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society.
