Illegal migrants not recorded at the border with Belarus
Latvian border guards turned back 30 migrants over the weekend while Polish border guards turned back 33, with a total of 76 illegal migrants denied entry to Lithuania this year.
According to reports, Latvian border officials turned back a total of 30 migrants on Saturday, while Polish border guards stopped 33 migrants on Friday, reflecting ongoing efforts to manage illegal migration in the Baltic region. This year, Lithuania has denied entry to 76 illegal migrants, highlighting a significant decrease compared to prior years. For instance, during the same period last year, over 1,600 attempts were made to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus.
The surge in illegal migration from Belarus to the Eastern European EU member states began in 2021, which Western nations attribute to the orchestrated actions of the Belarusian regime. This situation has raised tensions between Belarus and its neighbors, as well as with the European Union, which has imposed sanctions on Belarus in response to its conduct.
As enforcement measures at the borders continue, the numbers indicate a possible stabilization in the flow of illegal migrants into Lithuania and neighboring countries. However, vigilance remains critical, as the geopolitical implications of the crisis persist, with ongoing accusations against the Belarusian government regarding its role in facilitating irregular migration to disrupt regional stability.
