Ecuador and the US seize more than 2.9 tons of drugs valued at $70 million

The Ecuadorian Armed Forces conducted a series of operations at sea, resulting in the seizure of more than 2.9 tons of illegal drugs, with the support of the US Coast Guard. This collaborative effort underscores the joint commitment of both nations to combat drug trafficking, particularly in international waters where these illicit activities often take place. The significance of this operation is highlighted by the estimated street value of $70 million for the confiscated substances.
In the first operation, approximately 1.9 tons of drugs were confiscated 263 nautical miles southeast of the Galapagos Islands. This was made possible through intelligence sharing between Ecuador and the United States, indicating a well-coordinated approach to addressing narcotics smuggling in high-risk maritime zones. Two Ecuadorians were arrested during this operation.
The second operation involved the seizure of 56 kilograms of illegal drugs and resulted in the arrest of three Ecuadorians within Ecuador's exclusive economic zone, located 154 nautical miles off the coast of Santa Elena. The report emphasizes the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts between the respective Coast Guard operations centers, showcasing an ongoing commitment to enhancing maritime security and fighting against drug-related crime in the region.
