Salary Cuts for Ministers and Legislators Amid Financial Strain in Himachal

In light of severe financial constraints, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhu has announced temporary salary reductions for ministers, legislators, and senior officials.

Chief Minister Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh made a significant decision to temporarily halt a portion of the salaries of himself, ministers, legislators, and senior officials due to the state's financial pressure. This announcement coincided with the presentation of the budget for 2026-27, emphasizing the urgency of the economic situation. Sukhu clarified that this measure is temporary and that the withheld amounts will be restored once the stateโ€™s financial condition improves.

According to the budget details, the salary reductions will see a 50 percent cut for the Chief Minister, 30 percent for the Deputy Chief Minister and other ministers, and a 20 percent reduction for legislators over the next six months. Additionally, similar cuts will apply to the salaries of chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, and advisors of commissions, boards, and corporations, which will also see a 20 percent cut. Senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, Director General of Police, and Additional Directors General of Police, will face a salary reduction of 30 percent.

This decision reflects the government's response to the current financial emergency and highlights the need for austerity measures in public administration. As the state grapples with its budgeting challenges, the cuts may serve as a signal to the public about the seriousness of the economic situation faced by the government. The temporary nature of the cuts implies that the administration is hopeful for a quicker recovery of financial stability, yet it underscores the pressing issues in Himachal Pradesh's fiscal management.
