Disinfection measures started at the port of Thessaloniki for foot-and-mouth disease

Disinfection measures have begun at the port of Thessaloniki to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease in mainland Greece.

Disinfection measures have commenced at the port of Thessaloniki as a precaution against the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, which has been confirmed in Lesbos. The first ship arriving from Lesbos brought the disease to the city's port. The ongoing procedures include spraying trucks with disinfectants at specific points and requiring drivers to step on disinfection mats to ensure hygiene protocols are met.

Kostas Gioutikas, the Deputy Regional Governor of Thessaloniki, emphasized the critical importance of vigilance in controlling the disease, given its high transmission rate. He stated that authorities are on high alert, ensuring readiness to respond to any outbreak situations. Alongside him, Konstantinos Tertivanidis, the General Director of Agricultural Development and Veterinary Medicine of Central Macedonia, is monitoring the disinfection process to ensure effective implementation of health measures.

The disinfection measures are reportedly causing delays in the disembarkation of vehicles from ships. Further delays are anticipated with the arrival of passenger ships the following day, where passenger vehicles will be subjected to the same health safety protocols, prioritizing public health while managing the logistical challenges.
