Measures against foot-and-mouth disease in Lesbos – What is provided
The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has implemented urgent measures in Lesbos following a confirmed case of foot-and-mouth disease, including the establishment of protection and surveillance zones.
In response to a confirmed case of foot-and-mouth disease in Lesbos, the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food has enacted emergency measures aimed at preventing the spread of the disease. Local Control Centers for foot-and-mouth disease have been activated to coordinate relevant services and ensure timely public information. The measures include strict monitoring and management of livestock in the affected areas.
The regional unit of Lesbos has been designated with specific zones to mitigate the outbreak: a protection zone with a radius of 3 kilometers from the infected farm, a surveillance zone extending 10 kilometers from the farm, and additional restricted areas throughout the rest of the island. These measures are in effect until May 15, 2026, reflecting the seriousness of the situation and the need for prolonged oversight to curb further transmission of the virus.
Additionally, there is a comprehensive ban on the movement of susceptible livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, for purposes such as slaughter, fattening, breeding, or grazing, within the established protection and surveillance zones. These restrictions are vital for controlling the risk of the disease spreading to other farms and ensuring the safety of the local agricultural sector, which could be severely impacted by such outbreaks.
