Case of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle farming in Lesbos: Emergency measures for disease containment
A case of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed in cattle farming in Lesbos, Greece, leading to the implementation of emergency measures to contain the disease.
On March 15, 2026, a case of foot-and-mouth disease was identified in a cattle farming operation on the island of Lesbos, as confirmed by the Athens Veterinary Centerβs Directorate. Following this discovery, an emergency meeting was convened at the Ministry of Rural Development and Foods, chaired by Minister Kostas Chiaras, with the presence of Deputy Minister Christos Kellas and other top officials. It was decided to immediately implement the emergency action plan mandated by both European and national legislation for managing the disease, placing the entire island of Lesbos within a restricted zone where specific control measures must be enforced according to European Regulation 2020/687.
