Thessaloniki: Strict disinfection measures in the port and airport to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease from Lesbos

The region of Central Macedonia in Greece is enforcing strict disinfection measures at the port of Thessaloniki and Macedonia Airport to prevent foot-and-mouth disease transmission after a confirmed case in Lesbos.

In response to a confirmed case of foot-and-mouth disease on the island of Lesbos, the regional authorities in Central Macedonia, Greece, are implementing stringent measures aimed at preventing the disease's spread to the mainland. These measures focus particularly on the Thessaloniki port and Macedonia Airport, which are key points for incoming transport from affected regions. The decision was made following a meeting among local officials, including the Deputy Regional Mayor of Thessaloniki, Kostas Gioutikas, and the Deputy Mayor of Rural Economy, George Kefalas.

The authorities are concerned about a ship from Mytilene that is expected to arrive at the port of Thessaloniki carrying primarily freight, prompting the preventative actions. Additional measures are set to be enacted as another ship, scheduled to arrive on Sunday, is expected to carry both freight and passenger vehicles. The officials are working hand in hand with the Port Authority and the Coast Guard to ensure that all necessary protocols are followed to safeguard both livestock and public health throughout the region.

These protective measures come as part of a broader strategy to control the outbreak and reassure the public, especially those involved in agriculture and livestock industries. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges European countries face when managing animal diseases that can impact both agricultural economies and public health, making such regional collaborations crucial for rapid response to potential outbreaks.
