The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued two alerts for heavy rains in Maranhão, Brazil, indicating varying levels of potential danger.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued two types of alerts in Maranhão: a yellow alert indicating potential danger and an orange alert signifying high risk. The yellow alert warns of rainfall amounts between 20 to 30 mm/h or as much as 50 mm in a day, accompanied by strong winds of 40-60 km/h. In contrast, the orange alert forecasts heavier rainfall of 30 to 60 mm/h or between 50 and 100 mm in a day, posing increased risks of power outages, falling tree branches, flooding, and electrical discharges.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to heed several safety precautions to mitigate risks associated with the forecasted weather. Inmet recommends avoiding shelter under trees during windy conditions, steering clear of parking near transmission towers or billboards, and refraining from using plugged electronic devices. Additionally, people are advised not to climb onto roofs or conduct electrical maintenance during the anticipated rainfall, which could further endanger their safety.
The alerts are part of ongoing efforts by Inmet to ensure public safety during extreme weather conditions. As severe weather can lead to dangerous situations like flash floods and infrastructure damage, it is vital for residents to stay informed and prepared ahead of any emergencies that may arise due to the heavy rain forecasted for the region.
