Inmet issues three alerts for heavy rains across Maranhão; there are risks of flooding and strong winds
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued three alerts for heavy rain in Maranhão, indicating potential risks of flooding and strong winds across the state.
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued three levels of alerts: potential danger (yellow), danger (orange), and great danger (red) for heavy rain anticipated across the state of Maranhão. These alerts highlight the severity of the rainfall, with the yellow and red alerts set to remain in effect until 11:59 PM on September 4, while the orange alert continues until 10:00 AM on September 6. These warnings indicate significant amounts of rainfall of over 60 mm per hour and up to 100 mm in a single day, raising concerns for residents in vulnerable areas.
The red alert of great danger encompasses the entire Grande Ilha region, including São Luís and nearby municipalities such as Paço do Lumiar, Raposa, and São José de Ribamar, affecting all 217 municipalities in Maranhão. The high volume of expected rainfall presents substantial risks of flooding and river overflow, particularly in regions where topographical features may result in landslides around vulnerable communities. Residents are urged to take precautions to ensure their safety and minimize damage to property.
In light of these alerts, individuals are advised to take precautionary measures including turning off electrical appliances and staying informed through local weather updates. The impact of such weather conditions can lead to not just personal safety concerns, but also significant disruptions to everyday life and infrastructure within affected areas throughout the state of Maranhão.
