The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued two alerts for heavy rain across the state of Maranhão in Brazil, warning of potential hazards due to intense weather conditions.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued two alerts for heavy rain, classified as orange and yellow, for the entire state of Maranhão. These alerts were announced on Friday, with the orange alert indicating significant danger for regions such as Greater Island, São Luís, Paço do Lumiar, Raposa, and São José de Ribamar, extending to all 217 municipalities in Maranhão. The orange alert signifies expected rainfall between 30 to 60 mm/h and total daily precipitation of 50 to 100 mm.

In addition to heavy rainfall, the alerts also advise residents to prepare for strong winds, which could reach speeds of 60 to 100 km/h. The weather conditions pose risks such as power outages, falling tree branches, flooding, and electrical discharges. While the orange alert focuses on the most severely affected areas, a yellow alert is also in effect for the remaining regions of the state, with forecasts indicating rainfall between 20 to 30 mm/h and possible daily totals up to 50 mm, along with winds of 40 to 60 km/h.

The Inmet has recommended various precautions for the public to minimize the dangers associated with these weather conditions. Residents are advised to stay informed through official updates, avoid outdoor activities during severe weather, and prepare for potential emergencies, highlighting the importance of community awareness and preparedness in facing such intense weather events.
