Inmet issues new orange alert for heavy rains in MA; there is a risk of intense winds between 60 and 100 km/h

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a new orange alert for heavy rains and strong winds in the Maranhão state of Brazil.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has declared a new orange alert indicating the risk of intense rains and winds ranging from 60 to 100 km/h in Maranhão, Brazil, particularly affecting the Grande São Luís area. This warning comes after reports of flooding in the region, which experienced rain since the morning of the alert. The forecast suggests that heavy rainfall may continue throughout the day.

On the previous day, Inmet had already issued two alerts regarding heavy rainfall, classified as orange and yellow, which cover the entire state. The latest alert strengthens the warnings as it applies to all municipalities within Maranhão and is valid until 11:59 PM local time. Residents have been advised to stay cautious due to potential hazards posed by this extreme weather.

Authorities are warning that rainfall rates could reach between 30 and 60 mm/hour, accumulating to between 50 and 100 mm/day, accompanied by powerful winds. These conditions raise the risk of power outages, fallen tree branches, flooding, and electrical discharges, prompting local communities to prepare for possible emergencies and ensuring safety during this severe weather event.
