11 migrants from Belarus breached the border; border guards pursued them on land and from the air
Lithuanian border guards pursued a group of 11 illegal migrants from Belarus who attempted to breach the border with the help of accomplices.
On Friday, personnel from the Vilnius Border Guard Service noticed a group approaching the border line with Lithuania from the Belarusian side near the village of Ataukai in the Švenčionys district. It was later determined that 11 illegal migrants were accompanied by two men, one of whom began to cut through a physical barrier established on the Lithuanian side using a special tool. This barrier consisted of a concertina pyramid and a protective fence topped with another concertina roll. The other accomplice remained on the Belarusian side waiting for them.
The border guards, having detected the incident via a video surveillance system, quickly directed the nearest border patrols and canine units to the location. Additionally, a VSAT helicopter, identified as Eurocopter, was dispatched to the area to assist in the operation. This demonstrates the ongoing challenges faced by Lithuanian authorities in managing illegal migration across its border, particularly from Belarus where political tensions and smuggling routes are prominent.
The situation reflects the broader context of increased migration pressures on Lithuania's borders, especially during a time of heightened economic and political instability in Belarus. The Lithuanian government has been under pressure to reinforce its borders and respond effectively to incursions, which raises concerns about security, humanitarian implications for migrants, and the geopolitical dynamics at play in the region.
