No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus

Latvian border guards turned away 15 migrants on Sunday, while Polish authorities reported no attempts to cross the border on Saturday, amid the continuing issue of illegal migration from Belarus to Lithuania.

According to the latest reports, no illegal migrants have been recorded at the Lithuania-Belarus border recently. Latvian border guards on Sunday turned back 15 migrants attempting to cross, while Polish authorities noted no attempts to breach their border the previous day. This indicates a period of reduced attempts to illegally cross into Lithuania, in stark contrast to the influx witnessed in the previous years.

The last instance of migrants being turned back into Lithuania occurred on February 26, when two individuals were denied entry after illegally attempting to cross the border. This year, a total of 37 illegal migrants have been turned away from Lithuania, highlighting a notable decline in illegal crossings compared to the past two years. In 2022, there were over 1,600 attempts by migrants to enter Lithuania illegally from Belarus, while in 2021, the total reached over 1,000.

The surge in migrations from Belarus started in 2021, which Western countries have accused the Belarusian regime of orchestrating as a form of hybrid warfare against the European Union. The ongoing situation reinforces the tense relations between Belarus and its neighbors and raises concerns about the humanitarian conditions faced by migrants in the region. Overall, the current data presents an interesting shift in migration patterns and poses questions about future trends at the EU’s eastern borders.
