“Persons allegedly linked to Belarusian authorities arrived”: VSAT detained migrants crossing the border

Lithuanian border guards (VSAT) have detained a group of 11 migrants who attempted to cross from Belarus into Lithuania, allegedly accompanied by individuals connected to Belarusian security services.

On a recent Friday, the Lithuanian border guards (VSAT) reported an incident occurring near Ataukų village where their surveillance system spotted a group nearing the border. This group consisted of 11 migrants who were attempting to cross from Belarus into Lithuania. The situation became apparent when VSAT spokesperson Giedrius Mišutis disclosed that these migrants were being escorted by two individuals suspected to be linked with Belarusian authorities. One of them reportedly used a specialized tool to cut through barriers—specifically, a concertina fence—creating an opening for the migrants to enter Lithuanian territory.

As the migrants successfully crossed the border, they quickly fled into a nearby forest on the Lithuanian side, taking refuge amidst the trees. The rapid response from VSAT saw patrol units and K9 teams dispatched to the incident site, along with an 'Eurocopter' helicopter for aerial surveillance. The ground teams, receiving precise directions from aerial scouts, quickly located and apprehended the unauthorized individuals attempting to make their way into Lithuania.

This incident highlights ongoing border security challenges Lithuania faces due to increasing migrant movements allegedly facilitated by Belarusian operatives. The involvement of suspected Belarusian authorities emphasizes the complexity and potential geopolitical implications of the situation, as Lithuania continues to reinforce its border control measures to deter illegal crossings and maintain national security amidst rising tensions in the region.
