Police dismantles occupation on the banks of Rua da Marinha, a newly delivered COP 30 project in Belém

The Military Police intervened to dismantle an illegal occupation near Rua da Marinha in Marambaia, Belém, less than a day after the inauguration of a COP 30 project.

On the afternoon of Friday, the Military Police conducted a successful operation to dismantle an informal occupation forming along Rua da Marinha in the Marambaia neighborhood of Belém. The operation took place shortly after the inauguration of a project associated with the upcoming COP 30 summit, which was officially opened the previous day, raising concerns about illegal occupations in newly developed areas.

According to reports from the Military Police, over 100 individuals had begun marking out plots of land with the intention of erecting homes, creating a situation that could lead to further conflict over land use and legality in the region. The police teams, including the Metropolitan Tactical Patrol (Rotam), cordoned off access to the affected area to restrict the movement of the occupants and prevent any escalation of the situation.

The removal process was reportedly peaceful, with no resistance from those involved or arrests made. Lieutenant Colonel Alberto de Souza of the Military Police commented that security forces closely monitored the situation to ensure it remained calm. This incident highlights ongoing issues in Belém regarding land occupation, particularly in areas recently developed for significant events such as COP 30, emphasizing the challenges between urban development and housing needs in Brazilian cities.
