Walkway at COP 30 construction site had already faced criticism and inspection from Crea-PA before being dismantled in Belém

The 36-meter walkway in Belém was dismantled due to safety concerns, following previous critiques regarding its height.

A 36-meter walkway located on Avenida Júlio César in Belém was dismantled on Wednesday after safety concerns arose regarding the risk of it collapsing. This structure had previously come under scrutiny from the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy of Pará (Crea-PA), which had criticized the walkway's low height from the onset of its use in October 2025. Residents and motorists voiced concerns that the walkway was insufficient for the passage of larger vehicles, leading to further assessments by Crea-PA as part of their oversight responsibilities.

The walkway was part of urban development works associated with the Igarapé São Joaquim Urban Park, intended to be completed ahead of the upcoming COP 30 climate conference. However, delays in construction meant that the structure was not ready in time, prompting further criticism of the project's management and execution. Crea-PA affirmed that their involvement was in accordance with their legal responsibilities to monitor professional engineering practices, shedding light on the regulatory processes that govern public safety in infrastructure projects.

The criticism of the walkway began immediately after its completion, with numerous complaints highlighting inadequate heights that posed risks to vehicles, especially larger trucks. An incident involving a truck nearly getting stuck suggested potential serious safety hazards, raising concerns about future infrastructure projects in the lead-up to COP 30. Therefore, the dismantling not only reflects immediate safety concerns but also raises questions about the effectiveness of prior safety inspections and future project management within Brazil's ongoing urban development initiatives.
