A school bus nearly tipped over after getting stuck in a hole while attempting to cross a flooded passage in rural José de Freitas, Piauí, Brazil, with no students onboard at the time of the incident.
On Thursday, a school bus got stuck in a hole and nearly tipped over while trying to navigate through a flooded passage at Riacho Merinzeiro in the rural area of José de Freitas, located in northern Piauí. At the time of the incident, there were no students on the bus, which belonged to the Municipal Secretary of Education. A video circulating on social media depicts the bus leaning precariously, surrounded by water, with some people nearby assisting. The water level was reported to reach approximately knee height for an adult, demonstrating the danger of the situation.
The municipal government issued a statement confirming that only the driver and a monitor were in the vehicle during the incident and thankfully, no one was injured. It clarified that the bus was attempting to maneuver a detour along the state highway PI-115, which is frequently used during the rainy season when water levels in local waterways can rise. The authorities acknowledged that incidents like this are not uncommon during the rainy months in the region, indicating a persistent issue with road safety in adverse weather conditions.
Additionally, the municipality stressed that the incident was not due to mechanical failure of the bus but rather the challenging environmental conditions. This case highlights the need for better infrastructure and safety measures in rural areas, especially during the rainy season, to prevent similar accidents and ensure the safety of residents and public transport vehicles.
