Future drivers will be able to take their practical driver's license test in another city; see changes in SP
Drivers in São Paulo can now take their practical driver's license test in a different municipality if their original city lacks available slots.
In a significant change announced by São Paulo's Detran (Department of Transit), future drivers who are enrolled in driving courses can now take their practical driver's license test (CNH) in a municipality other than where they completed their classes. This adjustment aims to enhance accessibility for candidates who face a shortage of testing slots in their local area. This new flexibility allows for greater convenience and reflects the state's ongoing efforts to modernize and streamline the driver's licensing process.
Additionally, if a candidate has completed their driving lessons at a driving school, that institution is required to provide a vehicle for the test in the new location. Notably, since late last year, it has been permissible for drivers to engage private instructors and utilize their own vehicles, including those with automatic transmissions, for their practical exams. This shift in policy not only broadens the options for learner drivers but also facilitates their preparedness for real-world driving situations.
Another notable change allows candidates to take driving tests for two different vehicle categories—such as car and motorcycle—on the same day, a provision that had previously been restricted. Furthermore, Detran has introduced support measures for individuals with disabilities, enabling them to receive assistance via tablets for documenting medical board results. These enhancements are expected to promote inclusivity and efficiency within the driver's licensing framework, making it easier for all potential drivers to obtain their licenses in São Paulo, regardless of their personal circumstances or local constraints.
