Gallery: Karin Luts' retrospective exhibition featuring sketches and finished works opens at Kumu
A retrospective exhibition of artist Karin Luts, showcasing both sketches and finished works, has opened at Kumu in Estonia.
The Kumu Art Museum in Estonia has opened a new retrospective exhibition of artist Karin Luts, titled 'Pictures from Travels,' which features a collection of her watercolors and drawings. About half of the 160 works displayed are shown for the first time. Luts, who fled to Sweden in 1944, entrusted her artwork to the Tartu Art Museum, allowing her legacy to be eventually showcased in Estonia starting in 2001, three years after her first exhibition focusing on 'Conflicts and Confessions'.
The exhibition serves as a continuation of the Kumu display titled 'Sisters,' which also featured Luts among its circle of friends. Curator Mare Joonsalu shared insights about Luts' creative process, highlighting that many of her ideas originated from her travels across Europe, particularly in her favorite countries such as France, Italy, and Spain where she made numerous sketches. These sketches were often translated into more refined compositions back in her studio.
At Kumu, visitors can see the juxtaposition of sketches alongside the finished pieces, which allows for a deeper appreciation of Luts' artistic journey and evolution. This unique exhibition not only commemorates the artist’s contributions to the field but also highlights the significance of travel in shaping her artistic expression and the visual stories she created throughout her life.
