Karin Lutsu's exhibition at Kumu showcases sketches and finished works

An exhibition featuring both sketches and finished works by artist Karin Luts is now open at Kumu, highlighting her travels and inspirations.

The Kumu Art Museum has opened an exhibition titled "Images from Travels" by esteemed artist Karin Luts, which brings together sketches and completed works. Among the 160 pieces on display, nearly half are being exhibited for the first time. This show serves as a continuation of the previous Kumu exhibition featuring Luts, who was part of a friendship group showcased in "Sisters We Love." Luts, who fled to Sweden in 1944, bequeathed her paintings and graphic work to the Tartu Art Museum, from where the works eventually returned to Estonia in 2001.

The first exhibition of her paintings, named "Conflicts and Confessions," took place three years later, but sketches and drafts have waited for their turn until now. As noted by exhibition curator Mare Joonsalu, many of Luts' ideas stemmed from her travels across Europe, with favorite countries including France, Italy, and Spain, where she created numerous sketches that evolved into more refined compositions back in her studio. Joonsalu highlighted how the exhibition juxtaposes initial sketches alongside the finished works, offering insight into the artistic process.

Overall, the exhibition not only celebrates Luts' artistic achievements but also serves as an exploration of the creative journey, emphasizing how travel experiences can shape an artist's work. This display is significant both for art enthusiasts and for preserving the legacy of a notable figure in Estonian art history.
