Price Comparison: How Much Does a Basket of the Most Frequently Purchased Food Products Cost in Different Stores?
A study in Latvia reveals the price differences of a typical food basket across various retailers, with Lidl being the cheapest and Mego the most expensive.
In a recent study conducted by SeeNext in Latvia, a price comparison of frequently purchased food items was conducted across major supermarket chains including Maxima, Lidl, Rimi, Mego, and top!. The study focused on the average prices of a basket containing 28 common products such as fruits, vegetables, grains, pasta, oils, dairy products, bread, meat, coffee, and beverages, surveying stores in the cities of Riga and Daugavpils.
The findings indicated a significant price variation depending on the retailer and city, with the total price of the selected food basket ranging from €42.06 to €58.95. Specifically, Lidl emerged as the most economical option where customers pay an average of €42.11 for the basket, while Mego was identified as the least affordable, requiring an average of €58.59. Other retailers like Rimi, Maxima, and top! had average prices of €46.05, €45.37, and €53.74, respectively.
This price study highlights the cost discrepancies between different grocery retailers in Latvia, providing valuable insights for consumers looking to save money on their grocery bills, particularly in urban areas like Riga, where food prices notably vary. The results not only inform residents about their grocery shopping choices but also put pressure on retailers to remain competitive in pricing as consumers become increasingly cost-conscious due to rising living expenses.
