Searching for a feared substance in a place where it definitely does not belong

The Finnish Customs Authority has begun monitoring cosmetic products for compliance with regulations, focusing on potential allergens and harmful ingredients like asbestos.

The Finnish Customs Authority has initiated an inspection process for cosmetic products to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Last year, 155 cosmetic items were checked, resulting in the rejection of 27 products, most of which originated outside the EU. The majority of these rejected items included sunscreen, exfoliants, depilatories, and various creams, highlighting a significant concern about the safety of imported cosmetics.

Many of the issues identified involved mild violations, with 21 products having minor errors and primarily imported from outside the EU. Jonna Savander, the head of product safety at Customs, indicated that particular attention is being directed toward allergenic fragrances and preservatives, which are restricted by cosmetic legislation. The Customs Authority is also preparing to start monitoring for asbestos in powdered cosmetics, further emphasizing the rising concerns around cosmetic safety and consumer health standards.

Products that did not meet safety standards were either destroyed or returned to sellers. One notable case involved an eye cream containing a high concentration of aerobic microbes that posed a health risk, leading to its prohibition from entering the market. This proactive monitoring approach signals a robust commitment by Finnish authorities to safeguard public health and ensure that cosmetic products available on the market meet required safety standards.
