Asbestos Found in Play Sand in Finland

Asbestos has been found in children's play sand in Finland during a safety inspection by the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes).

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) has reported the detection of asbestos in children's play sand, a finding that arose during a surveillance project. In total, Tukes inspected 14 products meant for children's play, which included various types of sand such as magic sand, kinetic sand, and modeling clay. Of these, one product—a sand drawing tablet purchased from AliExpress—was found to contain asbestos fibers, notably chrysotile and tremolite.

Following the discovery, Tukes informed the public about the research results, prompting AliExpress to remove the product from its sales platform and notify customers of the potential hazard. The inspection results were reassuring in that most of the play sands and sand-containing toys examined were deemed safe. However, Tukes inspector Anja Merenkivi cautioned consumers about ordering toys from outside the European Union, as these products may not meet stringent European safety standards.

The issue highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of imported products and the importance of vigilant consumer safety checks. As awareness of the potential dangers associated with certain materials like asbestos grows, it emphasizes a need for stricter scrutiny on toys and play materials purchased on international marketplaces, ensuring that children's safety is prioritized in all products.
