Opening of Global Shared Kitchen at Seoul National University of Science and Technology

Seoul National University of Science and Technology has established a 'Global Shared Kitchen' to improve living conditions for international students ahead of the 2026 academic year.

Seoul National University of Science and Technology (Seoul Tech) is enhancing living conditions for its international students by establishing a 'Global Shared Kitchen' in line with the upcoming 2026 academic semester. The university currently hosts over 600 international students from 57 countries, accounting for approximately 24% of its total dormitory capacity of 2,500. Amid a declining youth population, attracting international students has become a critical strategy for the institution, aiming to improve overall student satisfaction beyond academic support.

To achieve these goals, significant improvements have been made to the dormitory facilities, including the complete renovation of old cooking facilities and the introduction of a 70 m² Global Shared Kitchen on the first floor of the female dormitory. Additional shared kitchens have been installed on the 9th and 11th floors of the male dormitory to enhance safety and hygiene standards. In tandem with these renovations, a 'Global Lounge' has been created in the basement to serve as a space for autonomous study and interaction. The university is also making provisions for its Muslim students by setting up a prayer room and modernizing recreational facilities such as ping pong, pocket billiards, and darts.

President Kim Dong-hwan emphasized that in the context of a declining youth population, international students are vital for the university’s sustainability. He believes that creating a stable living environment and a culturally inclusive atmosphere is the true starting point for internationalization. The ongoing improvements are seen as proactive investments aligning with the Ministry of Education's policies on university internationalization and capacity enhancement. The university aims to enhance its global competitiveness through improved retention rates, student satisfaction, and participation in global exchange programs, thereby fostering a stronger educational community for both international and domestic students.
