Prison sentences for Panevėžys district residents who ordered drugs from the USA

Residents of Panevėžys, Lithuania, received prison sentences for ordering a kilogram of cannabis and other THC and psilocybin products from suppliers in the USA.

Residents of Panevėžys district in Lithuania were sentenced to prison for ordering approximately one kilogram of cannabis and other THC and psilocybin products through the Telegram platform from suppliers in the USA in the spring of 2024. The packages, masked as children's toys, were sent to an unsuspecting individual whose documents were allegedly found in a car by one of the accused while working as a rideshare driver. Law enforcement discovered a wide variety of narcotic and psychotropic substances in these shipments.

Authorities found almost one kilogram (947 grams) of cannabis, with THC concentrations reaching up to 23.3%. In addition to the raw material for smoking, three electronic cigarettes containing cannabis oil were seized along with gummy candies laced with psilocybin and THC. The law enforcement officials also discovered a special white crystalline substance and packaging containing cannabis buds treated with psychotropic substances. The gummies containing psilocybin, identified as a potent hallucinogen, drew particular attention from experts due to their strong psychoactive properties.

This case highlights ongoing concerns within Lithuania regarding the illegal drug trade and the means by which substances are illicitly imported into the country. The use of platforms like Telegram for coordinating such transactions poses significant challenges for law enforcement as they strive to curb the growing issue of drug abuse and trafficking in both urban and rural settings across the nation.
