Three 17-Year-Olds Injured and One Killed in Dotonbori; 21-Year-Old Suspect Held for Mental Evaluation by Osaka District Prosecutor's Office

A 21-year-old man has been detained for mental evaluation after a stabbing incident in Dotonbori, Osaka, which resulted in the death of a 17-year-old and injuries to two others.

In a tragic incident that occurred in February at a building in Osaka's Dotonbori district, three 17-year-old boys were stabbed, leading to the death of one and serious injuries to the other two. The Osaka District Prosecutor's Office announced that Ryoga Iwasaki, aged 21, who was arrested on suspicion of murder by the Osaka Prefectural Police, will undergo a mental evaluation. This assessment, which is set to last until June 22, aims to determine Iwasaki's mental state at the time of the crime and his degree of criminal responsibility. Iwasaki's initial arrest was tied to the murder charge, during which he claimed he had no intent to kill, stating that he intended to intimidate with a knife but accidentally stabbed the victim in the chest. Following a subsequent arrest on charges of attempted murder and violations of gun and sword laws on June 6, he chose to remain silent. The incident unfolded on the night of February 14 at the entrance of a building in Shinsaibashi, where Iwasaki allegedly stabbed Ryuunosuke Kamata, a company employee from Nara Prefecture, fatally with a folding knife. In addition to the murder charge, Iwasaki is also suspected of attempting to kill two other teenagers present at the scene, one a high school student from Yao City and the other a part-time worker from Kashiwara City, by stabbing them in the chest and abdomen. The case has raised significant concern about youth violence and public safety in Japan, prompting discussions on the need for preventive measures against such incidents.
