17-year-old injured and killed in Dotonbori; man to be re-arrested on attempted murder charges

A 21-year-old man's charges are set to be updated to include attempted murder after a deadly stabbing incident in Osaka's Dotonbori area.

In a tragic incident in Dotonbori, Osaka, three 17-year-old boys were stabbed in February; one was killed, and two were injured. The suspect, Ryoga Iwasaki, 21, has already been arrested on murder charges and is facing re-arrest for attempted murder against the injured boys. Law enforcement officials report that the re-arrest is scheduled to occur on the 6th of March, following the conclusion of investigations into the incident.

The stabbing took place on February 14, when Iwasaki allegedly attacked two boys from Yaoyoshi and Kashiwara around midnight, aimed at killing them with a knife. One of the boys initially fell into a coma but has since recovered and was discharged on March 2. The other also suffered serious injuries but was released a day earlier. Tragically, a 28-year-old employee, Takayuki Kamata, was killed during the incident, suffering several stab wounds to his chest and neck, which ultimately cost him his life.

Witnesses reported that Iwasaki had been behaving inappropriately before the attack and was confronted by Kamata and the other boys, which may have led to his violent response. Police apprehended Iwasaki about 11 hours after the incident, initially charging him with murder. He claimed he did not intend to kill, saying he had only meant to intimidate with the knife, but later ceased cooperating with the authorities during questioning. The investigation continues as police seek to clarify the details surrounding the altercation and the suspect's motives.
