Nigeria: Interview - Old Narratives Surrounding Polio Vaccines Still Haunt Eradication Initiatives in Sokoto - Official

Sokoto State faces persistent vaccine hesitancy against polio due to longstanding beliefs, particularly in its metropolitan areas, according to the State Immunisation Officer.

In an exclusive interview, Bashar Garba, the State Immunisation Officer for Sokoto, discussed the ongoing challenges faced in the eradication of polio in the region due to deep-rooted beliefs against the vaccine. Many residents, particularly in metropolitan local government areas (LGAs) like Sokoto North, Sokoto South, and Wamakko, are refusing the oral polio vaccine, expressing long-held convictions that contribute to their hesitancy in accepting vaccination efforts. While some rural areas show better compliance rates, the metropolitan LGAs are experiencing significant pushback.

Garba emphasized that the stubborn refusal rates in the metropolitan LGAs highlight a critical gap in public health messaging and community engagement. Despite ongoing efforts to counter misinformation and provide education on the benefits of vaccination, the state is struggling to change these old narratives. The persistence of these beliefs poses a significant challenge to the government's initiatives aimed at achieving full immunization coverage and ultimately eradicating polio in Sokoto.

The Sokoto State Government is actively working to address the prevalent vaccine hesitancy through tailored outreach and education programs. Garba noted that further engagement with community leaders and influencers is crucial to shifting the prevailing perceptions around polio vaccines. Without this shift, the goal of a polio-free Sokoto remains jeopardized, potentially impacting not only local health outcomes but also broader national eradication efforts.
