Sprindžuks: The biggest challenge during the Vanšu Bridge repairs will be traffic organization
Riga's Deputy Mayor Māris Sprindžuks discusses the expected challenges in traffic management during the upcoming repairs of the Vanšu Bridge.
Māris Sprindžuks, the Deputy Mayor of Riga, expressed concerns regarding traffic organization amidst the planned repairs of the Vanšu Bridge, as highlighted in his interview on the TV3 show "900 seconds." He reflected on previous infrastructure works, referencing disruptions caused by the repairs of the Brasas Bridge and Altonavas Street overpass, which greatly inconvenienced citizens. Sprindžuks emphasized the necessity for the Riga City Council to establish a 'Plan B' to manage the altered traffic conditions effectively, noting the importance of creating predictable rules for commuters.
Furthermore, Sprindžuks mentioned the potential shift in public behavior towards increased public transport usage as a strategy to alleviate traffic during the bridge works. He asserted the city's commitment to ensuring public transportation remains efficient and accessible, despite the impending construction projects. The city plans to adjust public transport routes accordingly to mitigate delays and disturbances caused by the bridge's closure during repairs.
In terms of financing, the Riga City Council is expected to secure funding of up to 84.46 million euros for the Vanšu Bridge renovation, with allocated amounts for specific years: 6.7 million euros in 2026, 42 million euros in 2027, and 35.76 million euros in 2028. This financial plan aims to comprehensively address both the structural needs of the bridge and the associated traffic disruptions during this period of significant infrastructure overhaul.
