From the home opening game of FC Seoul on the 22nd, food will be served in reusable containers to reduce waste at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.
Starting from the home opener of FC Seoul on the 22nd, all food purchased at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, including popular items like chicken gangjeong, tteokbokki, and fish cakes, will be served in reusable containers. This initiative is part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's plan to switch to reusable containers for all food vendors within the stadium, specifically the GS25 convenience store and food trucks. Spectators will return the containers to designated drop-off points located throughout the stadium, ensuring convenience and promoting sustainability.
The city government has taken significant steps to address hygiene concerns associated with reusable containers. A professional operator will conduct a thorough seven-step process for collecting, high-temperature washing, and sterilization of the containers. Moreover, the hygienic standards applied in this initiative will be ten times stricter than standard commercial practices, ensuring safety for all attendees. There will be 25 designated drop-off stations strategically placed around the 3rd and 5th gate areas and the external plaza to make the process straightforward for visitors.
Seoul Metropolitan Government anticipates that this initiative will replace approximately 400,000 single-use containers this season, leading to a reduction of about 11 tons of waste. A similar initiative implemented last year at sports venues like Jamsil Baseball Stadium and Gocheok Sky Dome demonstrated effective results, with a significant reduction in waste even as attendance increased. This reflects the positive impact of sustainability initiatives in sports events, supporting a larger goal of fostering a 'Zero Waste Seoul', as expressed by Kwon Min, head of the Climate and Environment Bureau.
