Will the food waste facility in neighboring Gimhae be scrapped in response to opposition from residents in Busan’s Gangseo District?

Residents of Busan’s Gangseo District express strong opposition to a proposed organic waste facility in Gimhae, leading to its potential cancellation.

Residents living in Busan's Gangseo District are vocally opposing the construction of an organic waste processing facility in Gimhae, which is located nearby. Among those expressing discontent is Lee Han-gu, a local resident, who raised concerns about how the facility might negatively impact the air quality in an area known for its clean environment. He emphasized the discomfort it would cause local residents, particularly with the impending establishment of a new elementary school, indicating that children should not have to endure unpleasant odors from waste processing facilities.

In response to the community's backlash, residents in neighboring Myeongji-dong have joined the conversation, recalling their previous victory against another waste incineration facility. They find it frustrating that the Gimhae city government would propose a similar facility without considering the community's past experiences and grievances. The proposed facility is described as having the capacity to process substantial amounts of food waste and sewage, and there are serious concerns about the associated odors and potential air pollution that would affect a broad radius around the site.

Following the residents’ opposition, the Gangseo District of Busan requested a halt to the project's environmental impact assessment process and expressed their formal opposition, citing concerns over health, quality of life, and quality of the local environment. Subsequently, Gimhae’s city officials announced the cancellation of the public review and consultation regarding the environmental impact assessment, indicating that they will reconsider the project's execution in light of local residents' feedback.
