A Nigerian lawmaker has awarded scholarships to 1,240 students in Osun State to promote technical education.
Wole Oke, a lawmaker from Osun State, has awarded scholarships to 1,240 students across nine technical schools as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing technical education among the youth. The scholarship scheme, launched in 2021, supports students by covering their school fees, enrollment charges, lesson fees, and other related expenses. According to reports, this program reflects Oke's commitment to improving education and addressing unemployment in the region.
The beneficiaries of this scholarship are spread across various technical colleges, with the Government Technical College in Osogbo being the most prominent, having 469 students receiving aid. Other institutions such as technical colleges in Ile-Ife, Ijebu-Ijesa, Ara, Inisa, Otan Ayegbaju, Gbongan, and Osu also have significant numbers of scholarship recipients. The financial aspect of the scholarship program is substantial, amounting to approximately N15 million per term and N40 million per academic session, indicating a serious investment in the future of these students.
Highlighting the initiative, Oke pointed out that this scholarship is a strategic step toward reducing unemployment through the promotion of technical skills, which in turn aims to foster self-reliance and improve the livelihood of the youth. By investing in technical education, the lawmaker believes that more young people will be equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in various sectors, ultimately leading to a more skilled workforce in Osun State.
