The Ministry of Education is requested to approve recommendations for the admission of foreign students to studies in Lithuania

A Lithuanian politician emphasizes the need for stricter regulations on foreign students working while studying, leading to recommendations for quality assurance in admission processes.

Lithuanian politician L. Kasčiūnas has raised concerns about the actual academic engagement of foreign students in Lithuanian universities, indicating that many may misuse their student status to work instead of studying. He highlighted that this issue is somewhat systematic, pointing out significant cases of abuse where students are primarily employed rather than focused on their studies. This brings to light the concern that the current admission regulations do not effectively ensure that foreign students are genuinely pursuing their education.

In response to these worries, the Lithuanian parliamentary committee has decided to reach out to the Ministry of Education and Science (ŠMSM) with a proposal for the approval of recommendations aimed at establishing common quality assurance principles for the admission of third-country nationals into studies. These proposed recommendations have been formulated based on consensus within the academic community. The main goal is to create a more structured and reliable framework that governs the admission criteria for foreign students to ensure they are genuinely enrolled in academic programs.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, there are currently about 10,000 foreign students in Lithuania. This statistic indicates a growing trend in attracting international students, but it also underscores the necessity for effective regulatory mechanisms that protect the integrity of academic programs and the proper utilization of student visas, enhancing the overall quality of education in the country.
