Education Ministry Discusses Review of Study Process for Unqualified Teachers

The Lithuanian Education Ministry is considering revising the study process to better align teacher training with practical work experience, as many students are unable to balance their studies and jobs effectively.

The Lithuanian Education Ministry is currently addressing the issue of students working as teachers without proper qualifications. During a recent meeting of the Democratic Party faction in the Seimas, Vice Minister Regina Valutytė highlighted the trend where many students in various programs begin working in schools as early as their first year. This leads to a situation where students may suspend their studies by their third or fourth year due to challenges in balancing work and education. As a result, they often end up without the necessary qualifications for their teaching roles.

In response to this challenge, the Ministry has initiated discussions with teacher training centers to explore ways to synchronize the educational process with practical teaching experiences. Valutytė emphasized the need for the integration of practical work into the study framework, noting that while there are numerous practical training opportunities available, they are often disjointed from the academic curriculum. This lack of alignment has become a critical concern as it affects the quality of education and teacher readiness.

The Ministry is considering a comprehensive review of teacher education programs to ensure that the activities of individuals working in schools are more closely coordinated with their educational journeys. The goal is to create a system that allows future educators to gain essential practical experience while still pursuing their studies, thereby enhancing the overall quality of education in Lithuania.
