Guide: Indoor World Championships in Athletics in Torun

Sweden has a limited number of medal contenders for the Indoor World Championships in Torun, but some athletes have strong potential to secure top placements.

The upcoming Indoor World Championships in Athletics, held in Torun, Poland, sees Swedish athlete Armand Duplantis as the main favorite for gold, with limited competition among his compatriots for podium finishes. Wictor Petersson, who was the runner-up in shot put at last year’s European Indoor Championships, is among the notable athletes who could challenge for a top three placement. He currently ranks sixth in the world for the year with a throw of 21.38 meters, slightly shorter than his Swedish record set last year.

On the women’s side, both Axelina Johansson and Fanny Roos are competing in excellent form. Johansson recently set a new Swedish record with a throw of 19.47 meters, while Roos recorded 19.45 meters just at the end of February. Their performances position them fifth and sixth on the world season-best list, respectively, making them strong contenders in the shot put event to watch in Torun.

In addition to the established athletes, there are some darker horses in the 1500 meters with Samuel Pihlström and Wilma Nielsen entering the championships with the sixth best marks in their respective fields this year. Louise Ekman, sharing the sixth-best jump in the world for high jump, will also be an athlete to keep an eye on as she has recently improved her personal best by a significant margin, indicating potential for a strong performance at the championships.
