From Hong Oh-hee's Unpublished Works to Bong Joon-ho's Early Works... 'Devices of Asia' Exhibition Held at the Cultural Center
An exhibition featuring works of early experimental filmmaker Hong Oh-hee and director Bong Joon-ho's early creations opens at the National Asia Culture Center in Korea.
The National Asia Culture Center in Korea is hosting an exhibition titled 'ACC Film and Video - Devices of Asia' from September 19 to September 27, showcasing a range of experimental films and video art from Asia. This event is an extension of the center's efforts since its opening in 2015 to collect, research, and produce works in this niche, displaying pieces from 31 Asian experimental filmmakers and video artists, totaling 64 works in all. The exhibition also features an immersive experience with a circular structure draped in large canvases and a historical timeline of Korean experimental films from 1964 to the present on the first floor.
The exhibition highlights the significant works of Hong Oh-hee, a pioneer of South Korean experimental cinema, from her restoration of six pieces discovered in a private collection including the previously unseen 1975 work 'Three Mirrors.' The exhibition showcases the struggles and expressions of marginalized voices throughout historical contexts. In addition, artwork by Yoon Chung-kun critiques colonial perspectives on Asia, while Tomotoshi’s installation uses convenience store elements to examine the relationship between labor and consumption in everyday life. Artist group 'Listen to the City' addresses gentrification issues and social responsibilities through their works.
Visitors can also view Bong Joon-ho's university-made film 'White' and an installation reflecting Gwangju Theater. The second floor features visual interpretations by 19 graphic designers of the exhibited works, offering a diverse perspective on the influence and impact of experimental cinema on contemporary culture, all while inviting conversations about the past and present challenges in society.
