A wave of art film re-releases in South Korea has led to the screening of classic masterpieces previously unavailable in theaters, including works by renowned directors such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Yasujirō Ozu.
In South Korea, there has been a notable resurgence of art film re-releases, allowing classic masterpieces that never had a theatrical release to be screened for audiences. Director Hou Hsiao-Hsien's 'Bicycle Thieves,' released on December 4th, and Yasujirō Ozu’s 1959 film 'A Story of Floating Weeds,' which debuts on the 11th, are among the highlights of this trend. Additionally, other acclaimed films such as Viktor Erice’s 'The South' (1983) and Kwan Chan-pung's 'Shining in the Moonlit Night' (1987) are set to make their Korean debuts in the coming weeks, signaling a growing appreciation for cinematic history among contemporary viewers.
